    Optical Apogee Detection

    This method uses the fact that the sky is usually brighter than the ground. If a photo diode looks towards ground during ascend it will look towards the sky when the rocket tips over at apogee. This change in brightness can be used to trigger the deployment of the parachute.

    This method has been implemented at least twice. One attempt was done with two photo diodes producing a differential signal. A second attempt was done with LDRs but using the same principle.

    The system looks quite reliable and easy to implement. Furthermore it doesn't need a launch detection. That's why we go for it.
